Mary Moore (21), schoolteacher, married John Mackey (43), a schoolteacher in Carbonear on September 2, 1928, by Reverend Monsenior McCarthy. Bestman was Jim Bransfield and Maid of Honor was Margaret Fitzgerald. It was said the John was the most eligible bachelor in town and a real catch for Mary Moore. They met in 1927.

Mary Moore moved into the Mackey family home, a large three-story house with a library on the third floor. The house was on Patrick Street, just one block from St. Patrick's Church. John was living there with his mother, Cecilia (Hogan) Mackey. Cecilia lived another seven years and died in 1935.

Mary and John had seven children: Mary (1930), Clare (1931), John (1933), Margaret (1935), Paul (1937), Leo (1939), and Patricia (1941).

It is interesting to note that when Mary was born, her father, the Schoolmaster, closed the school and gave all the students the day off to celebrate the happy event. When Clare was born, they expected another day off but it did not come!

John was the local school master as well as a local practical legal and medical advisor for those in need. He was a charter member of the Knights of Columbus of Carbonear.
